I eye-balled this after a recent rain during a quick metal detecting hunt near Mission San Jose in California today. I didn't find anything else of note, but I own a few flintlock guns, and this is definitely a gun flint. It is most likely from a Mission San Jose Spanish leather soldier. Mission San Jose was founded in 1797. Monterey Banded Chert is predominately found along the California Coast from Monterey, north to San Fransisco. The dime is just for scale.
