Another thing to note Voyages from Acapulco stopped in 1815 after The Magellan left half empty. The port fell to insurgents who burned the town. Smaller Ships sailed with Permission for the vice royalty from San Blas. Silver was shipped to the Philippines in vain attempt to ship silver to Spain via the Philippines.

Shipping silver from Veracruz became impossible because of insurgent privateers in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. To complicate things insurgent privateers was now scouring the west coast of South America and Mexico. Spain suffering from the Napoleonic wars did not have the naval resources to protect their interests in the Americas. Portuguese, British, Americans sailors many veterans of the Napoleonic wars or the war of 1812 became unemployed.

As the South American war of independence progressed newly formed countries like Columbia, Argentina and Chile started issuing out letter of Marque for privateers to attack Spanish shipping.

By 1815 silver production was interrupted by revolution but also by falling production figures as well as privateers brought the end of the Manila Galleon trade.

Most of shipwrecks in California will be coming from the Philippines carrying silks exotic goods from china and porcelain. Silver from Mexico followed the trade winds further south to Guam then onto the Philippines. Silver was traded with China for Chinese goods that was highly valued in Europe..

Diver I mentioned on forum here, sent me a photo of beeswax found on the beach. Son of finder gave beeswax artifact to brother of this TN diver. Looks just like the piece shown on the PBS episode.
