This small brass piece was found where I have found a concentration of pistol balls and percussion caps...along with small buck shot. Was a site where fellows gathered to shoot at pelicans and gulls for a pasttime, popular in the 1850sand 60s. Any thoughts, cause I ain't got one.thanks in advance,vn.

Is this object hollow? The small semi-circular hole on the side farthest from the pointed parts appears to be filled with dirt/sand. Also, how thick are the pointed parts (are they the same thickness as the rest of the piece)? Can you post a picture looking at the pointed end?

My guess is no. I don't see anyway to adjust the sight if it were a sight.

Sorry, I probably should not have titled it as gunsight...as I really had no clue. I took more pics with diff angle and lighting, and it now looks like it may be some sort of type set...possibly a letter Z. Maybe I am narrowing it down a little.

Definitely not a Gun Sight. As stated, there is no way for adjustment except for windage and the sight blades would not be on a long end as it would sit so high on a rifle, shotgun, pistol or revolver, that the shooter would be shooting at the Moon. IMHO, it does not even appear to be Gun related.

Maybe a piece to a typewriter?

One end looks kinda like a 1809 Potsdam sight, but the rest of it ruins that idea

I dobbed the end of it with ink and this is what I got.

Yup, I did some googling and found some near matches even having the half circle indent. Apparently that as there to keep the letters aligned and locked in.it is a Z or a 2. Thanks all for your input on this...all it took was a suggestion for more pics, which often solves the mystery:thumbsup:

It looks like an electric motor brush to me....

I’ve set hundreds of those by hand to print invitations and books. It is ,most certainly a piece of lead type. The half hole was so you could tell that all your type is right side up.
