Well, it had been 24 hrs since my last hunt and I wanted to get back out there...

So after work yesterday, I decided to ignore all the warnings of my co-workers. There is an elem school just 1/2 mile from my office in a BAD neighborhood. I was tired of passing this opportunity up so I did a drive by. No bullet holes in my car - good so far, so I stopped and parked. WOW, old school - old playground equip AND teachers are still at school milling around loading up their cars. Looks pretty safe to me.... Can you guess my first signal??? 38 Cal bullet casing -'Is this a bad sign' I say.... Nah, there is guy over there mowing his grass and the teachers are around in case I end up slumped over my MD.

Lo and behold.... I have hit the motherlode of PLASTIC HAIR CLIPS!!! Now some of you may think that I am crazy for even being here to begin with.... But since I have started MDing and I mostly hunt elem schools, I have started to collect those little plastic hair clips. Some collect pull tabs, I collect hair clips. All in all I got 32 HAIR CLIPS from one school!!! I figure one day I will have enough to resell and will upgrade my MD. :) In 6 months I probably have close to 100 in all colors and shapes.

Other than that... I actually did find 2 rings, a bracelet and $1.01 in clad (several 1960's pennies). I got tones at every step so I still have alot to do. Penny city.

After an hour, the parking lot was thinning out and I lost some of gutsiness so off to Walmart I went.......

You have to love trying to listen with one ear to the sounds in the head phones and with other to your surroundings. I've actually detected longer then I expected too just to wait for shady characters to move away from my truck.

I work in a pretty rough city. As long as you stay in the business section during the day there usually are no problems. But being addicted to detecting and the business section is all asphalt or cement I will venture out of the safety zone at lunch for quick hunts. The crown jewel park that has history going back to the 1600s is next to a golf course that had three bodies dredged out of the water hazard in a six month period. I'm just hoping one does not turn up with a death grip on the DFX. LOL

All kidding aside it is a sad statement about the world we live in when you drive to work and pass billboards that read 'Help Wanted: Stop the Killings' paid for by the local board of education. My heart really goes out to the parents that lose their kids to the senseless murders...I could not even imaging.

I'm sure you meant to say a gutsy lady, and I'm sure you are one so please don't get mad at my correction, we all make spelling errors it's just that a gusty lady sounded like my gramma with gas ! :D :D :D

Hair clips from a schoolyard? Be sure you're not collecting livestock along with those little treasures. :o

Staceylee, please be careful out there! I don't like wearing headphones in certain areas, because you can turn around and have someone standing right next to you..just be aware of your surroundings and use your own judgement..we want you around for awhile!

HH,
Nat

By the way, are those plastic hairclips you're finding? I told my wife that very thing..there were so many at this one school I felt like picking them all up just to show people how many there were..there must have been more than 20.

On Natman's point about hearing: I have switched almost entirely to a DetectorPro Rattler headsingle - one ear speaker. It allows pretty good definition when I focus on the sounds yet I hear what is going on around me. In the park I can talk to kibbitzers and keep right on hunting. Also seems to be cooler to wear in hot sun - seems more than 50% cooler, but then my Black Widows are huge and black and absorb a lot more sun.

Yes do be careful, make sure you have a cell phone on you and mace wouldn't hurt either. I always only wear on head phone on my ear and the other off it, looks funny but I am so use to it now that when I try to wear both, it drives me nuts. I find hair clips at the schools too. Have a good and safe one.

Now who would bother a lady metal detectorist? I've never actually seen one! :)
You are gut-Seeee for sure. Post some pics!

Hey Stacey, I thought I was the only one picking those hair clips up! We have a large collection too. I stopped picking them up a couple weeks ago and my wife asked me if I'm not finding them anymore. So, I'm back to picking them up. She's planning to sell them at our yard sale. Some of those little girls wear 20 or 30 of them at once and they are constantly losing them. I went to a ghetto elementary school last week; the place was trashed, garbage all over. I had to go back to my car and get a larger bag to pick up the glass and leftover lunches and snacks. Lots of clad but not a record by any means. No one bothered me; there were some older boys playing basketball and neighbors across the street mowing the lawn...I just tried to be aware of where everyone was. Be safe.

I don't think I have ever seen a lady detectorist either. I wonder what they look like? ???

Consider investing in a bullet proof vest, brass knuckles or even a stilletto (the knife type not heels).

I often detect in hazardous areas as well, inches from freeways, gang infestations, etc..

It's wise to perform a complete 360 degree visual every couple of minutes.

Loved your subject line... Just had to look..

I do that too.

All kidding a side. Is it really worth the risk for some hair clips and coins.

Maybe attach a small trowel head to the end of a wooden baseball bat. If anybody messes with you - Stab em and whack em. :D

Come back next day and find the dislodged bling, gold teeth, whatever.

I have hunted several parks in "bad" parts of town. I usually get there right at daylight and they (bad guys) don't start coming out of the woodwork until about 11:00 so I was usually gone before they came around. The only problem I ever had was with a "gang" of 13 to 15 year olds that just kept getting too close and interfering with me. Finally I told them to keep their eyes open for a crazy killer who the police was looking for. I told them he was on older guy driving a white pickup and carrying a large knife. And that he had dismembered several teenagers. They went to the other side of the park while I got into my white pickup and put up my old digging tool, a 14" Mauser bayonet. Their eyes were as big as saucers! I laughed all the way home. Monty

Cool hunting, the only place Ive seen a lady detectorist was at Myrtle Beach and she was really good,I watched her and her hubby working the beach really early one morning from my balcony. I too hunt in the hood quite a bit,its a risk vs rewards situation. Obviously you want to keep your eyes peeled at all times, which is a good idea detecting anywhere. I think the real key to staying safe is not to stay in any one area too long as well as getting there early like Monty said, above all else if something doesnt seem right or you dont feel safe leave immediately, you will never regret leaving, but very well could if you dont,HH...Shoot

Maybe you should take Judo lessons.
