I did a ton of Google Earth imagining and historic aerial research to find places to detect here in Catheys Valley California it's a little mountain area all country as far as you can see I managed to see on historic aerials a foundation on a 1940s map and if it was a foundation then I figure it had to be pretty old catch was it's about a 3 mile hike out but I found a course that would take me straight to it I get there and see a foundation I didn't see from the map I look in the square foundation thing and it's old bottle galore was a huge bottle dump so many bottles I got excited and gathered up as many as I could but here's where things go wrong fast I start hiking back and start thinking hey I don't recognize this at that and soon I'm lost and bad I for about 3 hours could not find where I was I was so afraid I'd be stuck out there but managed to find my bearings on Google maps by pure luck regardless scared the crud out of me lesson learned

Some pictures this is all I could hold there is so much more I want to go back with a few back packs no shovel and detector just going to collect the bottles but I'm afraid I'll get lost again but I can't just leave the bottles there and this is a small amount of the bottle there are a few big old clorox glass bottles I want they look so cool

By the way does anyone know if cleaning the dirt off the front of the bottles hurts their values

very nice finds

I don't believe it hurts them, unless it has a good paper label.

Okay thanks because I'd like to get a lot of the dirt of them most have no paper just cork left over and some foil and few have paint or whatever you call it left the shiny looking print gold colored

It was about a 3 mile hike to get those bottles it's in the middle of nowhere literally I didn't come prepared to pick that much stuff up just had a tiny bag for garbage I just intended to metal detect was quite the surprise I'll be heading back tomorrow morning with two backpacks getting the few I got home was exhausted holding my metal detector being lost and just tired from the hike

Ha, I've done the bottle in every pocket, pouch, and backpack with detector, shovel and probe almost lost too!

Nice finds, get back there

Yep, some excellent finds,
Maybe putting down a trail of breadcrumbs will keep you from getting lost?? I mean, that's how we did it back in the day
Congrats on your finds.

Take a small hatchet or saw, matches, and take a COMPASS with you. Record the compass reading in degrees to the bottles and when you are finished add or subtract 180 degrees and follow that back to the vicinity of your vehicle. Hatchet/saw and matches are for, if all else fails and you need a fire to keep warm during the night.

PS, IMO, the cleaner the bottles the better they sell.

Lol I walk I don't drive

If you have a bike, rig up your packs on it and save your back, easy enough to walk it back.

Made it back with 2 big backpacks full and a little duffel bag full I didn't think I'd make it back my body was completely exhausted I had on backpack on my chest and one on my back and had to carry the duffle bag and it's about a 3 mile hike through hills it was not pleasant but I'm so stubborn

These are what I carried along with a shovel pushed my tiny 120 pound frame to my limit
