okay, so these are actually yesterdays finds...but close enough :)

It's not often we are able to get out here in Ontario in December...but I'm glad I did!!!

9 coins/tokens...oldest being 1807...newest being 1816.

Buttons, buckles, etc etc

and my favourite find...this georgian fob seal. Made the digging into 4" of hard frozen ground well worth it :) I had to actually bring a 6" x 8" chunk of frozen dirst home so I could thaw it out and see what I had in my plug haha

I know, anything you guys find pre-1900 would be the same as a rare find here. In fact, what you found there would be a excellent day for me in Dec, right now. The last Georgian seal I found had no stone.

PS. I haven't forgot about the buttons.

You might be handy to ID some mystery items for me that are probably quite common finds in the UK :) I'll have to get some pics up. There are a couple of pieces that I don't think are amazing finds are anything...but their identity has been bothering me for quite some time haha

Thanks on the buttons :)

And thanks for the answer on my fob. ;D

By the way ... What are those little knobs on the band? ???

Thanks Daisy :)

I believe the item you are speaking of is the piece of rectangular brass with three rivets in it!?

If so...I believe it's part of a stock clasp. Here is a great link which shows them about half way down the page. Mine is only half of the clasp obviously.

Wes ,amazing digs!!

Re: Had a great day for December here in Ontario, Canada!

You've got yourself a great site there, Wess! That's funny about bring home the plug so you could thaw it out to see what was inside.

Thanks for showing us! :)

Re: Had a great day for December here in Ontario, Canada!

Cool finds! I'd love to see some closeups of those old coins--they aren't like anything I've seen before.

Re: Had a great day for December here in Ontario, Canada!

thanks folks :) I'll get some closeup pics of the coins up soon if you wish.

Re: Had a great day for December here in Ontario, Canada!

Heck I'd get out in Dec. if I found all that. Nice job.

Wess, I live half an hour west of Ottawa. Are you stationed at CFB Kingston?

Ahhh...I know your area well Daisy. There are SOME places up there that would yield some nice old finds. I know of a couple I have been meaning to hit...but didn't get around to it this year. The one site should turn up finds like I made here...and better!

For the most part though...old sites like this are harder to find your way. Kingston has a pretty rich history.

Yes, I am stationed here at CFB Kingston :) Hoping to stay here for many years to come (although I doubt that will happen) unless I get an offer on a posting in Germany :)

Well if you ever need a little tag along minion to do your digging let me know... :P I could definitely use some pointers. My oldest find was a 1930 American wheatie. ::)

Forget Germany, unless you like drinking, get a posting here. :)

Those are some great finds. That seal is just awesome. An excellent piece to add to any collection. Have you been able to find any history on the seal?
I am a big believer in bringing home frozen dirt to thaw, especially if it was inside an old jug or broken crock...

Re: Had a great day for December here in Ontario, Canada!

Thanks everyone :)

I haven't been able to find any info on this specific fob Gypsyheart. I don't think I will either as there is no seal...so to speak.

I am pretty sure it dates from the late 1700's to early 1800's however.

Ahhh...well if that were an option for me...it would be a no-brainer! hahah Unfortunately I don't think I can be posted there :(

Re: Had a great day for December here in Ontario, Canada!

here is a pic of the other fob seal I found this year.

I placed the two side by side for comparison.

I have a feeling the one on the right is the newest of the two...although it was found at a site that turned up 1812 goodies as well. It's smaller and more delicate...and actually has a "G" on the seal portion in some type of green stone or material.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, the seal with the stone was actually not used as a seal but as a medalion hung around the neck to say "I'm important and I do actually have a seal"???

pretty much correct hah Not necessarily worn around the neck...but the "I'm important" statement kind of rings true. Many of these were merely decorative...but yes, still called a fob seal.
