Had my first ring return today!

I have had some time off lately, and have been pounding a park close to home before the weather turns bad or I get sent off for work again. It's pretty promising. Have pulled pre-war wheats and nickles every day so far, but no silver (go figure).

Was there this morning and had a guy about my age approach me. He said that his ring had come off his finger, and he was wondering if I would mind looking for it for him. He said he had rented a detector, but it was "beeping every square inch", and he couldn't make heads or tails of it. I told him I was more than happy to look. I went over and talked to his wife because he had to go to work, and she gave me the general area in which it might be found. He was throwing leaves at his kids and it flew off, evidently.

Neither of them knew whether it was silver or gold, so I had to assume it was gold and investigated about five times the amount of signals I would have had I known it was silver. The gal gave me her number and went home.

I found it after about an hour and a half, and she insisted on giving me fifty dollars for my time. I really tried hard to convince her I didn't want money, but she wouldn't hear it. She was gonna give me a hundred and I absolutely refused. Was a simple 14k white gold ring. She was very happy to get it back and she and her husband were really upset about its loss. Thought about asking if I could take a picture of her holding it, but I didn't want to seem like a weirdo. They were super nice people and I was glad to make their day!

Yeah. I told her many times that I did not want money and that I was detecting the park anyway, but she was having none of it. Also, she was pretty good-looking, and I didn't feel like explaining to her that I was wanting take her picture and post it on the internet!

Dan, that was a gracious and good thing that you did for that couple. The fella was obviously still out looking for the ring when you were approached, and you redeemed it (and him) for that (not wanted) compensation. I know that hey both are thrilled, and you had the joy of being a part of another's happiness.

Very nice gesture. If they throw the money at you, there is nothing you can do, but like Slider, I always ask if they mind posing for a picture. Most don't mind if you explain the hobby and tell them it will be on the Treasurenet site without their last name published. I really just want the picture for my personal file though. I have returned many rings and have a picture of myself presenting the ring back to each of the owners. Makes me feel good to look at the pictures every now and then. You did great just by taking the time to find it for them.

When faced with the payment issue I have, in the past, asked them to wright me a check and then I tare it up. Some folks don't realize that the good will is all the payment I need, and something money can't buy. Sometimes I double down and insist they give the money to the Salvation Army.

Great job! I've returned a lot of rings (and other items) myself. It's a wonderful feeling to be able to make someone's day. Early on, I have some people get very upset that I WOULDN'T take a reward, so, I just let them decide. If it makes them happy, it makes me happy.

I would not take money but i would not pass up the opportunity of getting some leads for a permission. Maybe they have old property or even have relatives with old property in need of a little scanning.
