Well guys I had to go back and give it one more swing before work and I got my first shield nickel. I believe I’m seeing 1877. I wish these dates were easier to read. Any tips on getting a better read let me know. Thanks for sharing in my joy [emoji1317] IMG_2539.webpIMG_2540.webp

UPDATE!! My friend tokensmith just brought to my attention that mine has the rays.... I didn’t even realize it. I must be losing mind lol my appreciation to him.....so officially I have to say it’s a 1867 Shield Nickel with Rays!!!

Feels like I just had a child

Well done Truth. You have been on fire lately.

Way to go!!!!!

Now we're metal detecting. Congrats

Congratulations! :occasion14:

Very nice find! Yours is in better shape than the one I dug 2 days ago. I can't read the year on mine either.

OMG your killing me! Another one on my list yet to be found. GREAT JOB!:notworthy:

One more thing...A nickel with no date means it can be whatever date you want it to be!

1877 would be nice, but a Shield Nickel with rays on the reverse was only made in 1866-67.

Congrats on the shield nickel. I found my one and only in about '97, all I could make out on it was the shield and a couple of stars, laid around about 3 years waiting for me to figure out how to get the super hard crust off in till I finally lost it. Truth I tell you, your one dedicated detectoristand I'm a sloth, lol.

Nice, congrats! Bet that made the last swing feel better. Nice looking nickel, wonder if you can get light at different directions to see the date a little better looking from above with some magnification. Shame that coins look nice and the date ends up being the first thing to get a bit toasted. Let us know if you figure out the date.:icon_thumright:

That's actually a pretty nice one. Every one I've ever found has been burnt toast.

Nic-a-date should work on shield nickels too.

With Rays, tokensmith is correct, better than your run of the mill shield nickle. Congrats!

sweet, congrats on the awesome find and you are killing it.

OMG I just realized it’s got rays! I must be slipping bad. Thanks so it’s definitely 1867.
