Hi Folks!!

This is a hafted scraper that I found a few years ago.It is made of very nice coshocton material. This scraper tho has always held my intrest because of something else. Maybe I'm reaching here but does anyone else see a buffalo effigy out of this? I know it is a scraper but do you think this was just the way it ended up , or could the maker have done this on purpose? Anyway , here is a picture of my hafted buffalo scraper. Hope you enjoy.

Bent-Twig, are you sure that it is a Hafted Scraper and not a Buffalo Effigy? I have seen some Buffalo Effigies from out west and yours is a dead on example of one.

Very cool!!

Dorkfish,

If I had found this out west it would have made sense , but being that I found it in nothern Ohio it would seem to be a hafted scraper. Scrapers are found here , but I have not heard of anyone else finding effigy's in this area. A cool find to me no matter what it might be , although I have always seen the buffalo in it.

I would still call it a Buffalo Effigy if it were mine no matter where it was found. It is just too much of a dead on example of one not to be. Just my opinion.

Scraper or Buffalo thats cool. Nice find Twig.

Molly. :)

It looks more like an effigy to me as well, I have never seen a hafted scraper even close to that basal config :icon_scratch:

I'm like everyone else. I have never seen a hafted scraper like that. I am going with buffler, also...d2

I agree, definetly a Buffalo Effigy. I would guess it was a trade item of sorts.

Definitely someone with an artistic eye made that one. I don't know anything about these things, but I think it was purposely made to look like a buffalo, whether it would be used as a scraper or not.

It seems that there was more attention paid to the belly and legs of the buffalo, so I would go with it being an effigy.

Thanks for showing us! Fantastic!

Bison actually extended way into the East, the last group of bison was killed in PA in 1803. I don`t know of any record of their bones showing up on Mississipian sites and makes one wonder if they hunted them?

Thank You all,

for the comments on the buffalo scraper effigy thing! I am glad that the going opinion on the piece is that its a buffalo effigy. When I found it that was the first thing that I thought of. It looked like a little buffalo laying there flat in the mud. I have only been taking insitu shots for a few years now and I found that one before I started taking the camera. I have alot of pieces that I wish had insitu shots of. Seems like I used to find alot more stuff before the camera days. Maybe I had better start leaving the camera at home.

THAT IS THE FIRST SCRAPALLO I'VE EVER SEEN. UNIGUE ..THANKS FOR THE LOOK.....

Hate saying it, but I also see a face on the rear of the buffalo, facing left. With his mouth open. Might be partial shadowing while in your palm that's doing it for me, but I see what I see. Really cool find!

I think its an effigy, but salvaged from a stemmed point that had been also used as a spokeshave, which began to form the legs. The head had been the stem, but humans being what we are and always been, the last owner obviously saw the potential in that tool and made it an effigy.
Nice find. I could do with finding one of those!!
