Great photos! Looks similar to the red-naped sapsucker.

Beautiful!!! We have Hairys here also, but the little downy is the one most frequently seen. Occasionally we get yellow-bellied sapsuckers! Is that not the best name for a bird? Great pictures :icon_thumleft:

We like seeing the birds from different locations.

Thanks NG,

Yeah sometimes I wonder who gave birds their names. We have Sapsuckers here also.

Thanks Tabfry,

I thought it was a red naped sapsucker until I looked it up in my book.

Always love good bird shots

No, I know it's hard to tell the size of a bird without something in the picture for scale. Pileated's are at least twice as big as this one.

Thanks, Ron

First time I saw a pilated one up near me I wasn't looking for it.
I heard something next to me in a backyard , turned , and not 10 yards away this thing was at the base of the tree. If it wasn't two feet tall it was within an inch or so. I'm a carpenter by trade and have been told I have a good sense of scale.
Pretty cool!

I like seein em cause 99% of what I see up here through the winter is ravens and crows. More crows showin up in the last few years.
