On Friday I secured permission to hunt an old home in Guthrie Oklahoma. This was a Victorian style home built around 1917. The front yard was small so I started there first. "Ol Yeller" (Ace 250) gave me my first hit within a minute. Pulled a 1953D Wheatie located next to the brick sidewalk. Worked toward the first of two large elm trees and got a dime signal at 4 inches. Pulled my plug and out comes a 1899 Barber Dime. This is my first venture into the 19th Century!!
Worked towards the second elm tree and got a penny signal right at the base of the tree, next to an exposed root. The signal showed two inches, so I pulled a shallow dig. In the plug, not an inch below the surface...........BAMM !!!!! I got a 1853 Seated Liberty Half Dime. This coin is in great condition and I can only assume that either the root keep it from diving deeper thoughout the years, or the root raised the coin.
The other amazing thing about this find is that this land was not even open to settlement until 1889. I would have never thought that I would find that old a coin in this part of the country. That is one more reason that makes this a killer hobby!
I spent five more hours searching this property. Ended up finding 6 Oklahoma Sales tax (old age) tokens which were issued in 1935. Also a small buckle that may have been from a dress boot and a cameo pendant that is in pretty rough shape.
