Yesterday, I came upon an untouched site. The coppers were 2"-3" deep, silver was about 5" deep, and no trash. The bad thing was the ground was mostly gravel. There was some sugar sand but not enough to keep me happy. The coppers were eaten up but the silver was alright. The half real looks like it may be an overdate. Feel feel to chime in if you can identify it.

Carlos IV (1747-1819), Santiago, Chile mint: 'o' over 'S'.
Assayers initials FJ.
The year ends in the number '4'; reducing possibilities to 1754, '64, '74, '84,' 94, 1804 and 1814.
More later...

PS: Second date number looks like a '7'; ergo 1804 and 1814 are ruled out.
PPS: Third number has rounded top, like an '8' or '9'.
My guess 1784.

Just a question…..and by no means am I disputing what you say, but Charles 4 was king from 1788-1808. Did they make coins for him prior to him becoming king?

Wolf, you're right. The date span I was using was the king's life span, not his years of rule. His reign were the years you mentioned: 1788-1808. If the c oin has a '7' in the second date space and a '4' in the last date space if can only be 1794 if issued during the rule of Carlos IIII.
Good catch; thanks.
