:hello:

yesterday I called into a farm on my way back from a unproductive days detecting :-\ the area is steeped in History, a 12thc Church stands in the grounds, and across the way there's a fortified hunting lodge :o

The lodge stands on North Cowton Moore, were in the year 1138 King David1 of Scotland was defeated in the battle of the Standards. I had already spoke to the farmer some years back, but never tried the area :dontknow:

As we talked the Halifax crash came up, and he pointed out the area were the plane had come down, I thought to myself, I'll give that area a miss :D anyway today I went and tried the field and found myself drawn to the crash area for some reason :dontknow:

The ground was real heavy going at first but eased a bit up the slope, three quarters the way up the field the scraps of Alloy started to show, one or two at first, then three or four in every sweep :'( after digging quite a few of these I tried to concentrate on larger items.

The first find looks like some sort of dial(brass) with markings going around it :dontknow: what its off, then a large back plate of something which has some plating and part of a serial number :icon_scratch: I found outher odds and ends but I don't recognize any of them, perhaps there are a few people on here might help :dontknow:

The Halifax had been stationed at RAF Croft which was home to Wellington, Lancaster,Whitley Sterling and Halifax Bombers, Croft aerodrome was home to a number of squadrons including 419 squadron from Canada, this particular air craft was returning from Germany, when it struck a Tree at Atley Hill, all crew sadly perished in the crash :angel11:

I have contacted a Halifax rescue group to see if they can shed some more light on the crash site, there seems to very little on line :(

Interesting, but I too stay away from a Phantom crash site in one of my fields. Bits everywhere....

Those poor men! To get back from a raid only to crash into a tree :(

Maybe the plane was damaged!

Pretty eerie though, the last person to turn that dial died on that spot :o

Nice pic from the field with the castle in the background :icon_thumright:

I think you found the spot with all those objects. Sad crash story (so close to landing) It would be interesting to hear if the Halifax rescue group can provide some details.

Thanks Spike  it could be that there is still a lot of this Aircraft still to be recovered :help:

Wow SS I wish I could hunt with you. The 026 pic looks like a set of silver contact points.

I am only looking at a picture but they look like electrical contact points. They often made the round tips silver for better conductivity. There would be another set that connects to these. I used to scrap out old contactors and save the silver. http://www.allproducts.com/manufacture100/songfa/product2.html

Sure could be. They are still used today in electrical contact relays in many different applications.

Fantastic......have you done any downed Luftwaffe sites.....If you could go to the site of Rudolf Hess's plane that would be pretty historical.
