Here is a hammered coin, a bit bigger than a nickel, that I found near downtown New Bern, NC about 10 years ago in a lot that had about a foot of dirt shaved. It is about as thick as 1 1/2 to 2 pennies put together. Years ago, a gentleman said that it was a re-stamped Spanish Maravedi, probably came from the West Indies perhaps made in the 15-1600's. Does anyone have any other ideas? I have always been curious about this hammered coin. It is made of brass or copper.

Thanks very much. I know nothing about this subject and this is a good place to start. Gilligan

I think it is an Islamic coin of some sort. They are very hard to decipher with a Western eye... even when they're in good condition.

You might also search India Princely State coins.

Coming from the West Indies makes sense as New Bern, NC was a huge slave trading center at Tryon Palace from what I understand.

well, it does look like an Arabic "3" and since maravedis were struck in multiples of three, without researching the "X" seems wrong and should be "XII"... but the "X" also seems wrong for an Islamic coin. whatever it is, it is a great find.

cool...got a link?
As they were counter-marked many times, no 2 look a like. I'm not an expert on all the various counter-marks, so ask the Spanish ship-wreck lot.

Hey Crusader.

Could you shed any light on this, found today in cirencester...6cm long and 3cm wide.
Got me stumped...thought maybe a powder loader for a musket but the others seemed to think not.

As always any insight appreciated.
Steve
