Here are a few field find examples. Pics 1-2 (favorite one) 3-4 extremely beat up (it might not even be one but it was used) 5-6 smaller but used a good bit. All were found the same day at the same site.

I would think that rough texture might be good for pressure knapping also.

Thanks Josh, hammerstones are like any Indian artifacts found, some are whole, some show massive use and some will be damaged.

Here's a few from my area. As Joshua stated, these are very under appreciated artifact. I pick up all of them I find. The entire center shelf are all Hammerstones either of Quartz, Granite, or Chert.

As Rasputia would say after her second fart, "Hmph. Twins!" I damn near had to run out the the shop and see if one of my favorites was still there!

Here's another of my favorites. Not to further wear out an already much overused phrase, but this thing "fits the hand perfectly", well, the fingers anyway. I don't know if the peak/ridge on one side was intentional or happenstance, but they obviously made use of it. The finest amount of wear/battering is on the bottom edge when holding it as shown. Surprisingly comfortable to hold, too. Can't help but wonder what it was used in making.

Middle Georgia. Both came from the same site, including this one as well. Oddball in both type of material and that it's made for right or left-handed use.

Great finds. The largest was used to make spalls and the smaller ones were used to remove bladlets and to make points.

cool rock garden southfork. I have a rock garden with preforms, broken scrapers, cores and cool material. Yours is way more organized than mine.
