Hi. I'm new to the forum and made an incredible find last Saturday in sc. I believe this is much older than Clovis but that is not supported for North America. What do you guys think of this one? Thanks for your thoughts here

First welcome to the forum. Yes it does resemble a Acheulean hand axe. Problem is they are still rewriting the history books. The process has been spoiled for that hand axe. No ability to carbon date it from where it was found

Thats a nice find. You should go back to that spot and see what else is out there. I am sure all of us have found some type of Ax. Check and see if you can find any picks in that area also.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to show it to al Goodyear from topper which is close to where I found this. He is carbon dating back to 50000 years at that site. I think this after research on the auchelean this axe is even older than that. Pre ice age possibly.... But wait not in North America!

Why do you think it's older than Clovis?

Could be what's left of a core. Sometimes they knock their flakes off and what was left was a large chopping tool. I'll bet I've found 25 here that look just like it and are no where near Clovis age.

Lets see some Scotto

Hey not sure but extremely similar technology to European hand axes. An archeologist said Clovis core from 13000 at least. Just trying to put this great mystery together.

Well good luck in your search and keep us updated on your find. Also welcome to the site! It is a very nice looking hand ax by the way.

Thanks man. I am going back Sunday to poke around. Here is half a point I found near the axe.

GTP, you mean they are rewriting the prehistory books, don't ya? Lol! The problem I have with these being older than Clovis is the fact that they are a far more common find than Clovis points. That doesn't mean they are less significant than the Clovis. In fact, I believe the Clovis to be over rated. Here is one similar to yours, that I found recently.

Nice find and hopefully they will be done rewriting that book soon!!

It could very well be older. It is a nice piece. Hopefully the area and other associated artifacts can nail it down for you. If it was just a random find it would not be that un common. But with location and context it could prove to be more. Welcome to t-net artifacts Handaxe keep posting and make your self at home. And be sure to update us. Could be exciting.

Looks like a Chopper to me and could be from any culture. They all used crude Tools like that to break open bones to get to the marrow.
