All Treasure Hunting
My name is Scott and I currently live in Egypt near Cairo. I am originally from Louisiana, but have a home in Katy, Texas. My family and I moved to Egypt in July of 2013. After talking to a few people here, there are apparently MANY ancient ruins sites throughout the country, and we actually visited one Roman ruins last weekend in Dimeh. Not sure if it would be classified as treasure, but was astounded at the volume of clay pottery there. To make a long story short, I found 6 different color glazed bits adn pieces of ancient pottery amongst literally millions of pieces in piles all around the site. I have heard that many people here have found coins, but we had no such luck. Also found a small 3"X4" piece of woven basket.
I am hooked and plan to go many more times before my time us up here (likely 5 years). My kids and wife loved it as well.

Welcome aboard cuenut!

Welcome to tn. Before you collect too many things, you should check the laws regarding collecting. Some places have very strict laws, and im guessing that Egypt is one of them. Although you may see many copies in the shops, they are still copies, and not antiques. Good luck!

Welcome and good luck.

thanks for all of the welcome aboard notes. I have been forewarned about all of the fakes here. What is interesting is that when you go to some of the vendors selling "antiques", they will even tell you that "this is real", and that this other piece is a fake and "only" 2-300 years old. I have been warned not to buy anything from a dealer, as the fakes are really good, even some of the WWII stuff. The only pieces I plan to take home, if we can, are things we find ourselves. From what I have been able to find out, the government is REALLY concerned about pharonic stuff, not so much anything else. will post pics when I find anything.

Hi Cuenut; Welcome here. A few things to be aware of ok. One is that sometimes the local natives have a strong tendency to "hate" anyone they perceive as "stealing" their heritage. So make "sure" you talk to them ok. Second is that if you are caught at an Archaeological site you can be arrested ok. I am positive that there are a million places to go detecting ok. But please be on the "SAFE" side. You are in their Country. Also if you read the news you will find that the locals really do not like Americans or Foreigners. So please watch your back there ok. Lastly, We are dying to see the pictures and videos ok. Good Hunting. PEACE:RONB
