Here is some of the hardstone we found this year. I think they are mostly pestles and grinders. I could be wrong.

Are any of them polished on the bottom where we can't see or show signs of having been ground down? Not being a smarty pants here but I don't see any of that in the picture with the possible exception of the large flat looking tan piece on the left hand side.

Well get us some close ups of what you think is the use wear, I can't wait to see this ::)

I'll tell you what. I've already shown you stuff with wear. You didn't think so, so why don't you post some pestles and grinders and show us all what it looks like. ;)

Why don't I show you a pestle? Very simple beano, I've never found one, they aren't THAT common that you can go down to your local creek and pick up five gallon buckets of them like you think you do. I would consider myself lucky if I ever find one at all and you, at the rate you are going will have hundreds if not thousands of them in a few years... this should be your first clue but no.... you still don't get it. I find hammerstones from time to time but I don't normally keep them... I will this year so you can see what wear looks like on a used cobble.

That's four peoples finds from a whole year. I'll be waiting for that post, but I won't hold my breath. I can't believe your telling me you haven't saved one hammerstone. A little Chinese for you, LMAO.

There might be one or two hammerstones in my rock garden but it's -35 outside and knee deep in snow, I have no intentions of looking for them. I'm certainly not going to put a hammerstone on display with my good stuff because I would run out of room quick, I only know one person who would proudly display every hammerstone he finds. ;D

The only whole Pestle I have found in lots of years of searching, but they are not always this obvious?

Here's the other side, and the working ends, of three of the rocks at the top. The longer piece is 9 inches, and I believe, a roller pestle. I believe you can see user wear on both ends. There are similar ones shown on page 163 of Hothem's "Indian Artifacts of the midwest book 2", and on page 165 of Hanna's Antique Trader ' Indian Arrowheads". The next piece I think you can see the peck marks on the side they shaped and the flat side. And last, the heavily worn end of a not so well made bell pestle, with a lot of patina. Nothing great, but I believe in them.

I agree with you and Cannon. They are not that common to find. I found this one in 1982 ,the only whole one I,ve found but then again I don,t live in a dream world like Beano.

Now that you updated the pics bean... the only "wear" as you call it that shows on any of those pieces is natural. No artifacts there, not one, sorry.

Ohio- I have yet to find a single whole groundstone tool of any kind. I have a couple of broken pieces but that's about it. So hard to find around here, wish I lived a little farther south. That pestle is a beauty.

You guys are cracking me up :).It is getting quite comical reading your posts beanman.I don't know where you come up with this stuff but I hope to see you post an artifact that will get positive feedback someday soon.I agree with the rest of the gang on this one.Rocks Rocks Rocks.
By the way thats a nice pestle you found there Ohio.

Two of those stones look like they were used to work on hides, throw a hide over a log and take the fat and hair off, small hides. They used wood on large hide unless they had a stone like my daughters, it is 13" long and about 2 1/2. It is course stone and still has stains. I cannot tell if the others were used for that but , I think most of them were. Any slick were used for grain or nuts (processors). The kids fingers or the old mans headLOL. Gnewt

Thanks Gnewt. That sure could be. I have some stuff that is stained where I think they held it. Like it patinaed different there. I hope someone gets to compare the one, to the books I mentioned. Thanks again!
