No real plan today, other than drive around some of our further away permissions & see what's available. Although we did take a couple of tubs of finds to give to some joint landowners & show them what we were keeping. This didn't go to plan as he was too busy with hay making. What was good timing though was that when I dropped the finds & GPS maps with the farmers wife, she stated the son-in-law is visiting later & he is an Archaeologist. (I can't wait for that story later....)
We tried a small edge piece on this farm for 1 hour 15 mins & only got 4 buttons, possible lead token & our first WWII period Pigeon Ring. Although it's got the NURP (National Union Racing Pigeons), these were used for the War effort & being dated 1943 who knows what messages it carried! These are highly collectable.
The next farm only had a tiny failed area of Wheat that took me 15 mins to finish - Old Penny & another first for me - 5 Shilling Reward Fob for a car key. It's funny what this hobby makes your learn, but this company was one of the first to have a payment system for an early car, & my Fob expired in 1958 which is the last year of the United Motor Finance Corporation:
''Noel Mobbs, with his brother Herbert, had formed the Pytchley Autocar Company to sell private cars in 1903. He also formed the Pytchley Hire Purchase Company, the first of its kind to offer easy payment terms for the purchase of motor cars. It became the United Motor Finance Corporation and was absorbed into Mercantile Credit in the 1950s''
We then popped into the head office of our largest farming permission & they stated they had started on the Barley this Saturday. (First to start harvesting) We went to that farm but the 3 fields they were doing were the worst of the bunch & after 1 hour 15 mins of nothing for me & a '4' & button for Cru'dad we called it a day, as it was crazy hot, & no good areas to do.
So probably our worst day this year but still things of interest.
On the plus side the harvest has begun so the windows will start to open....
