headphones advice

When I purchased my unit I bought some cheap headphones with it,they are really bulky almost 70's old school style. What is the difference between headphones capabilities, can one use a good pair of lightweight walkman or MP3 headphones? Looking for a slimline design without spending more than $40.00. Any and all suggestions appreciated. thank you. Ron

Personally, i like the earbuds as opposed to the "earmuff" style headphone. You can get an adapter at radio shack for the plug, and then just pick your headphone of choice. I prefer one with an amplifer or volume control on the headphone itself.

Any headphones you get should be 30 ohms or more, 8 ohm phones have a really dull muffled sound. Calrad full size 32 ohm phones is about $35.

Any phones will work but my Whites manual says 60 ohm or higher. Rob

Depends on your detector, some work well with 8 ohms (Garrets, Red Heat), some need more (32 ohm for XP´s), and some a lot more (Minelabs) to work well. Headphones (Depending on your hearing) can make or break your finds rate on a machine. what sounds bright and clear on one machine, can sound dull and lifeless on another, and that´s the difference, especially on tone only machines, when you might have a gold coin under or next to a piece of iron.
