Headphones

I found a pair of JVC headphones with 1/4" adapter online for 15.00. I was wondering if these would be ok to use with my metal detector? I know that more expensive ones will give betteer sound quality but I am new and will be digging everything for a while anyways.

They will probably work. I bought a cheap set of headphones from Radio Shack for my first pair and hated them. They had a straight cord on them and I was always getting it tangled up when laying the detector down to dig a target. Within a weeks time I spent the money to buy a good set of headphones with a coiled cord and solved the problem. Wish I would have spent the money I spent on the original pair for a good pair to begin with. I now have two sets of Killer B's, one stereo and one mono for my MXT Pro and Spectra V3I.

Just about any headphone will work with a detector. The detectors are so "LoFi" You are waisting your money to get an expensive set. Of course extra money is spent to get more comfortable headphones.

Of course any headphone will work, but some will perform better. Aside from the comfort issue you mentioned, which can be a big deal in extreme weather, some have a broader range of frequencies, some keep the noise out better, and some have noise canceling abilities. I have one detector that gives the same volume tone regardless of depth. I can use an earbud in only one ear with that one just fine. My other detector has a modulated tone that becomes a faint whisper on deeper stuff. Some of those I would not be able to hear with certain headphones.

smsdmc, All the sound variations you mentioned are products of your detector, not the headphones. The frequency band output of a metal detector is so narrow any headphone will reproduce it. Now the resistance of the headphones will vary the volume. That is an 8 ohm headphone will be about twice as loud as a 16 ohm headphone but they are both capable of reproducing any sound the detector will put out. A fancy name on the headphones doesn't make it reproduce better with a metal detector.

I have an inexpensive pair that came with my detector. I can honestly say the sound quality is night and day difference between the budget vs the premium headphones. They have a completely different sound and on mine I can distinguish much more variance in the tones. The comfort is night and day difference as well. Got the Killer B II's and believe they are FAR supperior to the TW's that came with it. I would have never known If I had not plugged in a descent set of earbuds to try them on these hot summer days. Realized really quick the detector had much more to tell me than I was hearing. The only reason I got the II's vs the regular Killer B's is my hearing is a little off in one ear and each side has a volume control. You guessed it ....damaged from years of gunfire. I did not take the precautions I should have when I was younger. I did check other premium brands and all had very similar sound quality. The B's were the most comfortable. Who knows my original phones may have just been lemons. Prior to my G2 I hunted with an old Whites Spectrum and the original Whites that came with them for many years.
