Found this guy today only find worth noting lately have not been swinging the coil much lately. It was super deep and I seem to remember there being some debate wether these were civil war era or not? Any info would be appreciated. I'm ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1505855350.299700.webp

No help with ID but congrats on a nice find

It's a civil war era harness buckle shield. Horse hardware.

I found one just like it a couple years ago. Mine was found at a site where nothing pre-dated the 30's so I assumed it was just a buckle or modern horse tack. I still thought it was a cool find and yours is as well

I thought it could be! I'm super stoked about it because our house was built officially in 1898 but I believe there was a house here before then as there seems to be remnants of an older foundation in our back yard and I had found a GAR national encampment medal in our yard and a former owner of the house was a civil war veteran

I thought these buckle protectors post-date the CW & its a another case of an urban myth/mis-ID?

They also say that those were used as Civil War "Bedroll" buckles. The woman would roll up the mans bedroll, and tie it off with the heart harness buckle so as to remember their wives while they were off to war.

BEAUTIFUL FIND.

post war buckle cover

Rob (creskol) is right. Post war but still a good find!

They are not blanket roll buckles. That was a misprint in an old relic book and the misinformation just won't die.

But you still think they are CW period? My memory is not great but I thought we dug out a post-war patent for these.

Lol. Civil War time period to CRU is like something that happened last weekend. [emoji12]

I dug one about 3 weeks ago in the woods that had a bit of leather strap still attached.
