Found this today near 1828+ house site, also site of US cavalry 1863. Has anyone see one like this and do you know what type of box or trunk this was on?

Looks more like it was riveted onto a strap of leather . Looks like a keeper hole for the other end.
 
Nope, its from the side of a bucket or vessel. 2 of them to hang it over the fire. (Metal cooking pot hanger)

Cru is spot on - definitely from a large pot or kettle. An eyelet like this was riveted on both sides to accept the 2 ends of the handle.
