Hello 1800's My First!!!!

Got out yesterday with xGREGx to a small Southern Michigan town that we have been doing some recon detecting in. The daylight was fading fast and for the most part all we had been digging was clad except for the stray 1917 Wheatie that came up earlier in the hunt. We had probably an hour left of good light and like I said clad was about all that we were finding when I got a good dime sound on the Explorer SE. So I marked the spot and got out my trusty Garret Pro-Pointer and checked the top of the ground and got the light tone/vibration that tells me the coin is close to the surface. Imagine my response when I opened the plug and found this 1877 Seated Dime within the first 2-3". In fact this thing was still in the grass roots and I thought that I had a Merc. that was until I seen the words "One Dime".
Man that was an unexpected find and my first 1800's coin. We have already made it our goal to hammer that place when the weather breaks. We have snow coming today so we are chomping at the bit to go soon.

Thanks Sherm
Even better is when you're not expecting something even close to what you have been finding in the area you are detecting.

Not much until the ground freezes up and it won't be long. We've had probably 6-8" that just melted off and more coming this afternoon. Wish for :icon_sunny:

Re: Hello 1800's My First!!!!

Congrats on the Seated! Hard to believe they could be this shallow but i'm thinking they are either attracted to sunlight, or more logical, ground surface erosion. I say this because my 1877 Seated Lib Quarter was found at less than one inch. Just cant keep good coins down! nice digs! JJ

Re: Hello 1800's My First!!!!

Congrats on the seated, they are awesome!

Re: Hello 1800's My First!!!!

Congrats DJH, you just never know! I'm also in S. Mich and in the last month I have dug 2 Barber quarters, 1892, 1907, Canadian quarter 1871, and 1916 Canadian large cent, and all have been very shallow, 2-3" deep. Snow is here yet ground is still soft. HH, AMC

Re: Hello 1800's My First!!!!

Cool find, I'm still waiting for my first 1800s coin.
A 1900 Indian head is the closest so far.

Don't worry Greg, I will show it to you anytime you ask to see it. Although I will have to go to the vault and bring it out under gaurded conditions. ;D
