Hello all. I found this site while doing a Google search about how to locate and file a gold claim in California. From what I've read so far, lot's of good info and knowledgeable brains to pick. I have spent some time trying to navigate the BLMs site and figure out what it takes to locate and file a mining claim, and it is quite overwhelming. I feel like interacting with folk's who know on this site will help me move forward with my goal of having a gold claim that will produce enough to make a piece of jewelry for the wife here and there.
I'm no stranger to the wilderness and aside from growing up in San Francisco, I have a cabin on a ranch in the mountains of Mendocino County that was built by my Grandfather. I have always been intrigued by the prospect of gold mining. But what really got me interested in finding out how to get my own claim was when a friend married into a family who has a 100 year lease on a claim outside of the town of Washington on the South Yuba river. They invited me up there once and I couldn't believe that a person, or group could have rights to what is essentially their own campground, and pull gold out of the water at the same time! I didn't find any gold that weekend, but exploring the area was fascinating and I decided I would like to have something like that of my own.
Between family and work, it's been hard to find time to figure out what to do or where to go. A fellow parent at my daughters school and I got to talking and it turns out that we share this same interest. I told him that I had looked into it and found the process pretty overwhelming, and because of that, I wasn't putting much effort into it, and he said "You gotta keep the dream alive." And he is absolutely right, so here I am...
