Metal Detecting
New here from Tennessee. I recently got into metal detecting and have two older models ive been using. A whites 5900 d/i pro and an elite bounty hunter. The house I live in is from the early 1900s, possibly a little older. The property has had several buildings and allegedly another house as well. Im having trouble finding much other than iron. Lots of old farm junk and garbage but no coins. Any tips for my particular situation?

I have found what is either civil war caltrops or a jackstone where a barn once stood. Other than that, only pieces of plows and debris.

Welcome from Texas

One good thing to know is gold gives the same signal as iron. Sometimes coins hide underneath iron and check around trees. My advice. Good luck out there! :icon_thumright:

Welcome to TreasureNet! Sounds like you have a great place to hunt. Good luck!

Wow, that certainly stinks about the gold and iron signals. My MD's sound more like a geiger counter than a metal detector in most spots, so I have been discriminating against iron to keep from going insane. I guess that's not the greatest idea then? Thank y'all for the help!

I did find this pin in my front yard the other day. The pin part broke while cleaning it. I believe it to be gold plated. It registered gold om my Whites machine.

What's up with the RabidCaveman moniker? My brother lived in Tennessee back in the 70's near Lenior City. There was a cavern on the property & we explored into it probably 1/4 mile or further until it got so narrow we couldn't crawl any further. A couple of times it opened into some pretty good sized rooms. It was a lot of fun.

I'm a caveman that has contracted rabies. It isn't just a clever name. My area has A LOT of caves. Unfortunately, most are either closed off because of private lands and several of those have been filled in with (literal) garbage from old timers.

Welcome! I'd keep them and learn all you can with them. Do a search here in the brands section and see if anyone offers up any knowledge. Also check youtube. Practice swinging over different coins on the ground and in a test plot and see what happens. Check Tennessee in the state section and see if anyone is near you to share information.

Welcome to the forum! :icon_thumleft:

Thanks everyone! I got permission to hunt a pre-40s school building along with the homestead and barn as well. I will be going very soon. I'll post it if I find anything good!

Gold tends to ring in the nickel/ pulltab range on many detectors. Sometimes you have to remove the trash that is masking the good signals.
