Found this piece of slag (1-2lbs) in front of a railroad station that dates back to the 1800's. It rang up as a solid silver dollar, but once I dug it... it jumped back and forth between silver and iron. I know slag is a mixture, but I'm just wondering if it would be worth having it smelted. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Another $1.62 in clad pulled out of the parks.

Cant help ya on the slag :dontknow:, but it looks like you had a good day :headbang:

Babbitt metal. VERY common find around railroad yards & depots. It's an alloy used as bearing material and the old worn out bearings are melted out of the cavity and new molten metal poured in it's place. I have a large piece that's very rough on one side where it landed in the dirt & cooled and smooth on top. Not worth having smelted but a cool relic of the railroad left as you found it. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,314844.msg2267302.html#msg2267302
