HELP! Can anyone identify???

This piece is solid brass and about 3/16 inches thick. The patent date is hard to read, but appears to be PAT AUG 14, 1866 Or 1868.

I tried to search the patent records but came up empty handed! Maybe I didn't know how to do it! Anyway, any and all help appreciated!!!

NO, IT CAME FROM CENTRAL VIRGINIA, BUT TO BE HONEST THE REASON I BOUGHT IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE STAR! Even with the post war patent, I was hoping that it had something to do with Texas. Be my luck it came from the Star Machinery company! Thanks so much for your reply.

It may take some time and work but I have been able to do it, I was not even able to read the last part, the year, my choices were 1898, 1899, 1896. I was able to find out what this mystery item was though. I will try to find the patent of your find.
