Help for working with Wreckfinder Aquascan MC-3 magnetometer

Hello !

This is my first time posting on the forum and I want to apologize for my bad English first. I have been a professional diver for over 25 years. For several years I have been passionate about the search for shipwrecks in the Black Sea (I am from Bulgaria). I have bought from the best metal detectors on the market and I have a few hits that are wrecks of ships from the 17th to the 19th century. To expand the search area, I decided to buy a second hand magnetometer. In the end I got a proton magnetometer Wreckfinder Aquascan MC3 .I know it's morally outdated, but for a beginner in magnetometer research, I think it's a good choice. I read the whole manual and got some idea about working with it. But there are still a few questions for which I am asking for your help:



1. What should be the setting of „Area Tune“, for Bulgaria region, because the guide is only for the United Kingdom

2. At what distance should the lines be in meters in a parallel search for remains of cannons and anchors

3. At what depth from the bottom should the probe be when searching for cannons and anchors

1) Call or email the folks at AquaScan. They can and will answer your 'area' question
2)According to the AquaScan manual, you would want to run 30 meter lanes to detect iron objects around 1 ton.
3)The closer to the the more the mag will pick up. Looking for cannons and anchors, I would suggest no more than 13 meters off the bottom and 6-7 meters is a better choice

There is much information in this publication. Many will perhaps disagree with some of it !!!

My buddy who has some experience says that
1) Use 48-59 that is the magnetic zone polarization time 1 second
2)Depth no more than 10 meters from bottom
3)Each pass 15 to 20 meters max

I got the much expected answer for my magnetometer. And here he is:

"Firstly, we are not the manufacturer of the MC3, it was discontinued about
35 years ago and the original company no longer exists.

We cannot provide any support for the MC3 but can tell you that it was only
capable of operating in the magnetic field associated with the location of
the UK. Bulgaria has a lower magnetic field; therefore it will not operate
in Bulgaria. I have attached a section of a magnetic map that shows the
contours that relate to the UK and the Black Sea, you will notice that the
southern part of the black sea is outside of the contours that relate to the
UK. If the MC3 is in good working order it should operate in the northern
part of the Black Sea.

I am sorry that I cannot give you any more assistance."


🥴I'm thinking, isn't it possible to isolate this "Area Tune" setting?
