My grandfather found this old flare gun many years age while working in a quarry. He says it was fully encrusted in rust before he boiled it on the stove for hours in a weather/laundry detergent mixture.

There are several markings and numbers but I have no idea how to ID this piece. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I would love to solve the mystery for my grandpa:)

Asmerri, You have a genuine World War One German Hebel flare gun, circa 1917. Your pistol has had the grip frame bent forward, pinching the mainspring and rendering it inoperable, who knows, maybe on purpose or accidentally. Great find and family history with it. Sub 8-)hebel.webp

Wow! You made quick work of that. Thanks Sub! Grandpa will be fascinated.

From the looks of that muzzle, someone sawed off about two inches of that barrel long ago...Because it was found at a quarry, this pistol may have been used as a warning device in the mining industry. Sub 8-)

cool. makes you wonder why it was bent

They must of cut alot of them down . I have an identical Flare Gun to the one Asmerri found . It came from my grandfather . I'm not a gunsmith , but I'd say it's in good condition . Lots of markings on the left bottom of the chamber . Looks to have a dark hardwood grip . But has the shortened barrel also .
