They have identified this correctly for you. Actually you already had it sorted. I have found several of these at Civil War camps and Coal Camps. So if you ever see movie scenes of the folks from back then sitting around the campfire listening to harmonica music, know it was a popular form of entertainment.

I agree, the other replies you've received are correct.

Figured I should mention, the brass harmonica read-board you found is an uncommon version, made to allow you to play the harmonica during both exhaling and inhaling. A harmonica made to play only during exhaling into it has reeds on only one side of its reed-board. Note that yours has reeds (the long narrow thin brass strip riveted onto the end of each slot) on BOTH sides of the reed-board.

I see lots of mention of civil war era when it comes to dug harmonica reeds, I’ve found a bunch grouped around older sites that I hunt… well old for se Kansas, civil war would be pushing the early limits… my question is, is there any reliable way to date them or was there a certain period they were more popular?
