Hi everyone,
I need help with a precise identification of a silver metal artifact. Based on family knowledge and initial observations, it is believed to date back to the Early Medieval period.
Here are the specific details to help with the evaluation:
1. Composition & Metal: It is made of silver (or a high-content silver alloy). It does not react to a magnet.
2. Design & Inscriptions: The front features faint engraved lines and symbols. The back shows remnants of how it might have been attached or hung.
I have attached high-resolution photos taken in natural daylight from the front, back, and edges, along with an item for scale.
Any insights on the specific culture, exact period, or origin this could belong to based purely on its design and fabric would be highly appreciated! Thank you..

Interesting ... Hard to tell for certain, but, it appears to have been cast from a mold. Knowing in what area of the world it was found may help identify. Was it dug?, found in a stream or lake?, found in an old dwelling? a family heirloom? ... aside from silver, neither pewter, or lead attracts a magnet, either. Were it Early Medieval & made of silver, one may expect a bit of patina/corrosion, especially if copper were mixed in. You could have a coin shop or jeweler determine whether it's silver, or, not. Please share some info concerning it's discovery.

Thank you for your valuable insights! To clarify regarding the appearance: the bright lighting in the photos makes the metal look much shinier than it actually is in person. It does have natural darker patina and signs of age in the recessed areas. As for your questions:- Location: It was found in North Africa (no specific site data available). - Metal: I am certain it is silver, though I do not know the exact purity percentage or if it is a specific historical alloy. I really appreciate your advice about having a jeweler test it, and I will try to get the exact purity and weight soon to update the thread. Looking forward to any
