Found today. It's a flat button (slight concave, with missing shank. Possibly military? Front looks like an eagle clutching a French horn or bugle. Back has words stamped into it, but a little hard to read. Says something like "Chamberlin"& some other words... Not sure..
Picture isn't the greatest. Sorry..

It has similarities to a early riflemans button but I can't find a match in Alberts or Tices. I am watching this thread because I want to know what it is as well. I also took the liberty of enlarging your photo so prople can see it a little better.

I thought I might add that it's smaller than a quarter, but a bit larger than a nickel.

If the eagle has a crown on it's head, it's French, War of 1812 period or a little later. Can't see enough to know for sure.

Late, as usual.

Crowned eagle?

Looks like a military button but not US. Maybe French?

I believe it does have a crown. Because I first thought it looked like a fierce rooster. Haha! So you think French?

Update: I cleaned it a bit more & it says "Berlin" on the back, along with a couple other words. I believe "Gilt" is one (which I'm aware means plated), but can't make the other out. The front is a bit clearer as well. It's an eagle with what looks like a cock's comb above it's head, and it's clutching an early bugle horn. Any ideas?
