Greetings: This is my first message/chat session. I have been using a White's Quantum XT for over 10 years. It is great for sandy beaches but tougher to use for relic hunting on fields. My buddy uses a Bounty Hunter MD and wants to upgrade to a better detector, too. Since he has access to some colonial fields/areas in jersey, we both want to upgrade to a better but user friendly detector. We would appreciate feedback from experienced users as to the models of detectors that we should consider to buy. We figure a grand each should buy us a decent machine. We would appreciate any comments as to which machines would be good both for fields and beaches. We look forward to your inputs and thank for your help. By the way, include any leads as you can for vendors or dealers who loan out machines for field tests before buying if you know of any that do this. Again Thanks Much!!

I don't think you need to invest $1000 each in a good relic or all terrain machine. My personal favorite is the new AT Pro from Garrett - M.A.P $594.96. Great all around machine with exceptional depth, discrimination and target separation. If you want a strictly relic machine, the Tesoro Tejon is a great choice - usually around $550.00 to $600.00. Either machine is easy to learn and will give you many years of service. Both companies have superior customer service. PM me if I can help you.

A good machine, that will surpass yours and your friend's current machines, is an Explorer. It will effortlessly go from land, to the salt water beach. It is good for relicky field type hunts you describe. It is deep, retains good ID at the deeper depths, etc.... It's very awkward to get used to though, so hook up with a proficient user (not just a sandbox clad hunter) in your area, if you can, to trade off flagged signals to compare. Note how he swings, what sounds he is trying to hone in on, etc...

Minelab xterra 550-750.

I am keeping my mine lab xterra 70 , but getting a At pro as well, its hard to beat for the buck ,and water proof up to 10 feet , i have had much luck with my ace 250 , but this at pro seems is out of this world all for under $600

I'll second the Tesoro Tejon. It's pretty much made for relic hunting. Especially, if you use it in all metal mode. Not sure how it handles beaches though, but it does have a manual ground balance.
