Help needed to identify

Hello,

I found this item about six inches below the surface.

It is metal (iron) and heavy.

There is a round opening at both ends of different diameter and the openings do not pass through.

It was found where the Union Army had a munitions supply that either the Union or Confederate armies blew up.

The area has always been lightly populated and there is no evidence of dumping in recent times.

The cris crossing pattern is on both sides.

Does anyone have an idea what this is?
