Dug this little sweetie yesterday and can not seem to coax anything off the front of this flat button but managed to put the back under a magnifying glass and snap a pic with my iPhone. Definitely says Scoville and best extra rich. The front of the button is toasty but still retains some gold gilt and looks like the surface of the moon pretty much. Any help determining it's age (not a lot to go on I know) would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would say 1827-1840 :icon_thumleft:

I'm curious as to your guess,is it the words used on the back that helped you determine that date ?

scovills 1827-1840, scovills & co. 1840-1850, scovill manufacturing co. 1850-1960, scovill mg. co. 1850-1865, scovill mg. co. Waterbury ct. 1850-1865, levenworth, hayden & scovill 1811-1827, j.m.l. & w.h. scovill 1827-1840-------hope this helps, tom
