Help on making a test plot

I want to make a good test plot, but I need some information. To practice pinpointing I need to know exactly where the coins etc are. How do you mark the item's location without interfering with the MD? Any other points I have missed? I hope this is semi-permanent so the wife, grandkids, and I can practice for a while.

Well I measured out from the back porch. Mine is 12' across, so I made 5 rows, 0' 3' 6' 9' and 12'. I made a row of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and the 5th row is "others". the coins are buried in 2" increments from 2" to 12". 12" is WAY too deep! They are also 3' from each other in the row. Mine has been in the ground for about a month and I can only detect the 2 and 4" coins. (using a Garrett 1350) The "other" row has wedding rings, class rings a dime on its edge, a nail, dime 2" from a nail, a pulltab, and a coke can at 12". (that one is EASY to pick up.) If I had to do it again I probably wouldnt go deeper than 8".

Shorty, mark your targets with golf tee's. For shallow targets just cut some of the tee off.
