I found a coin last week with a bunch of
others... I found an 1832 capped bust half dime in
awsome shape... I also found an 1820 capped bust dime
"holed" from square nail that I have not posted yet I
am posting a pic of the 2 coins from the same
field about 10 ft. apart... they are exactly how I
found them no cleaning... the pic shows a big diff. in
the 2 coins what it doesnt show is how shiny the 1820
is its as shiny as a "mirror" I can clearly see my
reflection in it the only coins I have that come close
to it are proofs... could this 1820 dime be a proof?? or can you polish a reg. coin to a mirror shine without damaging the details? this one has me puzzled.
on the pcgs website it says that there may have been 5
proofs so even with a hole its in great shape and is
extremly rare if its a proof? please take a look at
the pic and let me know what you think the
possiblities are... jd

JD,

First, nice finds! Second.... I wouldn't get too caught up in how the two piece of silver compare even if they were found at the same site. I've dug coins literally feet apart that have 'weather' totally different. I've dug IHs that looks awesome coming out of the ground... then there's those IH you have to struggle to verify it's and IH and not a wheatie. Lastly, I don't like the 'look' of the hole in your coin. All of the holed silver coins I've ever seen look alot smoother than your coin. It almost looks like an aluminum can that you shoot... :) Irregardless of the finally outcome they're still awesome finds.

It's a rare coin on tnet after all, what percentage of folks on here even found one? Keep posting the finds JD!

It may be Me, Or Enviromental Damage.

But the Reeded edge & CHIN just Dosn't look correct.

COOL FINDS, J.D.

Jeff

Hey Jeff, I see why JD is thinking its a proof. The reeding around the edge is much more defined and seems to be well struck. If not a proof, still very nice!!!! WTG JD You continue to amaze!!!!

Hey JD, Those are some great coins. Any bust find real or fake is a good find. It does look different. Even the liberty in the head band has a distinctive look to it. I wonder why someone would coat it down.

Maybe it was messed up coming out of the mint.

Good luck with finding out. Let us know what's up with it.

thanks guys its always fun trying to figure out a mystery :)

Hi,

I still think its a copy and not silver, it dose not give me the feel of looking at a silver proof. You know that awe feeling. Plus how come the punch is on the right and not the top, almost where it would say COPY. Like others say still a cool find.

Keep @ it and HH!!

thanks Jeff I was hoping its a counterfiet coin it would have been my first US one, the local coin dealer did a silver test on it and says its def. silver... im hoping to hit the St. Louis Coin show in the fall there will be enough experts there for me to know for sure...

Mudswat out of 35 holed coins I have found only 7 were holed on the top the rest are all over the coins from sides to even the middle so that theory is out the door...plus the hole was made with a square nail...its not round like todays fakes would be, and where it was found nothing above 1858 has been found there. I really thought it was silver plated but the coin dealer said its not... so that kinda threw my theory for it out the door... also you cannot tell from the pic I posted how shiny it actually is, it is a mirror finish if you put it up to your eye you can see your eye looking back at you.

could a coin be highly polished to a mirror finish like that???

I got this from a person who only collects capped bust pieces

Hi JD and welcome to our CC family.

Your dime looks like it was polished before it was lost in the field. This would make sense since it's also holed which means it may have been worn as a necklace or as a watch fob. This is the large 0 variety. What people dont realize is at that time they were experimenting with different types of dies and proofing unless I get the coin in hand I cannot confirm or deny it is a proof or not but as I said earlier I think it was polished. the 1820 has 13 different varieties, looking at your picture I can confirm its a JR-2 variety which makes it a fairly scarce piece. I cannot give you a price range on this piece.

Your half dime looks like it has some very nice detail remaining - just darkly toned. I would say it has EF to AU details. It looks like there is some minor rim damage. I would put the value of this one between $175 and $275 depending upon the eye appeal in-hand.

These are excellent finds! Thanks for sharing them with us.

Cool find! Thats rare that it came out of the ground in such great shape. Vern

wow nice coin. seems odd but why would people hole coins. you sure seem to dig alot of them looking at your other posts. is this what they call CULL. coins? :D

jfx55 I dont know if they are considered cull coins... I would say probably so... I know there is guy who walks around with a fishing hat and vest filled with holed coins... and he found a holed coin half dollar that was an unknown variety. well here is the link I'm sure most of the "treasure net coin experts"!! would have told him its not worth anything because of the hole lol lol.

Hopefully it's an unknown, about to be known variety. I don't pretend to know, or to be a "treasurenet coin expert" "lol lol" But there is some obvious differences between the two pictured. The stars, the hair, the face, the 1820 numbers. Even the hooters in comparison look phoney....but then so many today are, it's difficult to say for sure. uh.....lets see now.....where was I? uh...O yeah!! Hopefully all these differences make for an unknown and rare coin. HH

Re: Help! Very Rare Coin!... Maybe? ALIENS????!!!!!!

hehe I figured you'd like that one pete!! lol lol... thanks for everyone hoping its some rare undiscovered variety!! but I'm betting its some type of polished coin thats not worth much Im sure happy to have it though!! the mystery continues!!!

I have been wondering if its metal from an alien spacecraft, or a meteorite that fell on a missouri out house and was worshiped by members of the Presbipartying Church of Procrastination.. who decided to make counterfiet coins and put "strange" holes in them because no one would ever heat up a square nail and melt a hole in a coin instead of just punching it through...also I think it was a conspiracy because the hole was made in the 10th star which means the aliens have laid claim to Virginia since that was the 10th state. and of all the strange features on the coin if you take away the feminine parts its looks exactly like Elvis Presley... which I can tell you is exactly what the Presbipartying Church of Procrastination is all about because on the night of Aug. 15th 1977 a person in Virginia pooped out a large piece of feces in the Shape of Elvis's head and it has been worshiped by them ever since!! may Elvis Presley the patron saint of Rock and Roll bless this forum and my coin!!! yee haw!!!!!!!!!

Well let see , after all that is said so far the coin still looks like it's conterfit and silver plated... that is close I'm sure...!!! thanks for posting JD.... 8)

Ode to de coin!!

Oh shiny little friend,
with a hole in your star,
thank God you did not bend,
or you would not have gone this far,

some people think your real,
others believe your fake,
yet that shiny silver doesnt peel,
I believe you are a lovers keepsake,

you were found in field,
very lonely and dirt free,
through love your fate was sealed,
now that I have found you I'm as happy as can be!

I wanna thank you, thank you very much!!! hh jd

I usually stay out of these Coin debates, being as I know nothing about them...but in this case...I* am agreeing with JD on it is a rare and valuable Elvis Coin.
