Looks like the rust hanging off of the Titanic. Chemical reaction with salt water? What environment did you find it in?

could be charcoal? Or some burned wood? I know my detector picks up charcoal a lot..

I was of course joking a bit with the Titanic post. I do however feel that it definately looks like some kind of corrosion castoff. Especially since it looks like cylindrical was inside.

i believe it is a crucible, for melting brass to pour. I found them at the Griswald pistol factory in ga.
