HELP!! WHAT IS THIS ??

Found this "whatsit" all i can say is that its fairly lite and made out of a substance like pencil lead (graphite)

Looks like the rust hanging off of the Titanic. Chemical reaction with salt water? What environment did you find it in?

could be charcoal? Or some burned wood? I know my detector picks up charcoal a lot..

I was of course joking a bit with the Titanic post. I do however feel that it definately looks like some kind of corrosion castoff. Especially since it looks like cylindrical was inside.

i believe it is a crucible, for melting brass to pour. I found them at the Griswald pistol factory in ga.
