I got my BH sometime in Feb. (I think) and haven't really used it all that much. Everything seemed fine until yesterday. Went out to the creek to do some swinging and looking for arrow heads. No luck on the arrow heads and no luck with the MD. At first it was fine, got a few hits that turned out to be nothing but trash stuff, so my husband suggested I try the creek to see if we might get "lucky" and maybe find some gold. Nadda!!! After using it in the water, (supposed to be water proof) it started beeping at everything in All Metal Mode. I knew the area had alot of foil, cans and other trash but this thing was going crazy. I lifted it up to check the bottom, thinking a piece of foil paper was stuck to it and it continued to beep. No matter how I would hold the thing it would beep. I switched it to Disc Mode, seemed fine but got a lot of false hits. It would beep once, then nothing. Going over the same spot area several (hundred) times and nothing, same with the Auto Notch Mode.

I am going to change the batteries, (being the logical explanation) but not sure that is the problem because the low battery light has not come on yet. Everything is connected and seems tight except the main box, it seems kinda loose and has been like that since day one. I thought that was normal and never paid any mind to it. I took the coil cover off and wiped it dry, dried the coil and still very erratic beeping as soon as you turn it on. Even with it laying on the ground, it beeps at the air.

ANY suggestions on what the problem may be or what I need to do with it??? I bought it from KellyCo, have not contacted them yet.

Thanks, Tammy

*forgot to mention, I turned the sensitivity and Disc/Notch to both extremes and got same results no matter what they were set on.

I think there is a difference between a water proof coil and a submergable coil. One you can dunk in the water the other you can't. The inside of your coil probable got wet so let it dry for a few days and if that don't work then take it back to the store or manufacture. Just don't tell them that you dunked it in the water. That detector has a five year warrenty.

its your batteries, mine does that all the time when batteries are low, i have never once had that dang light come on. ive had mine out in the water many times and have had no problems, just make sure you dont lift the coil too high or water will run down your shaft and could get into the control box. also another tip watch that coil cord where it connects to the control box mine likes to wiggle free from time to time. good luck and have fun.

I've used my BH Lonestar in the shallows of freshwater lakes in Central Florida on many occasions in the past.It never gave me any problems. The only thing that seems "loose" on mine is the connection between the upper rod arm and the lower rod arm.Take/Send it back to KELLYCO.

The only part that got wet was the coil and a little bit of the stem. It was nly in water about 2 inches deep. I did change the batteries and still got same results so I sent an email to KellyCo and got a response back that the coil probably leaked and to call a number for Bounty Hunter. I called them and they said to send the coil back with the main box unit. I did that about 3 weeks ago and havent heard anything back and no replacement parts yet. Im getting worried I wont get it back, seems I been waiting forever :-\ I'll call them tomorrow to see what's going on.

I won't deal with Kellyco, they're too diversified.I've heard stories, some good and some bad when dealing with Kellyco.I wouldn't worry too much about the Bounty Hunter manufacturer, just call First Texas products, explain your situation and ask why it's taking so long.I'm sure you have the number but here it is anyway-1-915-633-8354.They aren't as bad as everyone thinks.

That's where I sent the parts back too, First Texas Products. That's the same number the guy from KellyCo gave me so Im gonna call them back tomorrow (well later today lol) and find out what's going on.

I finally got the new coil TODAY! Now I can get out there and do some T'hunting ;D

Well did the new coil fix your problem?

I totally forgot about this thread after getting the new coil. Yes it did fix the problem, but I have decided I do not like this MD'er at all. It's a good machine and finds deep targets, but it finds "Everything" no matter what I have the sens. or dsc. set too it still finds the junky pull tabs and nails. Also, I can never tell if im over the target or next to it and the holes I dig end up huge. I get too frustrated and usually give up. :'(

Im thinking about sending it back for an upgrade on a different machine. :-\

Your gonna have a hard time trying to discriminate out any highly rusted ferrous objects like nails. They do make machines with a pinpointing feature though.

Yea I agree with not being able to discriminate the nails and such. It's not really a problem having to dig those, that I don't mind. It's that I never know "where" the target is or how deep. I usually end up with a hole that's 5ft wide and 10 feet deep only to have the target two inches down and one inch to the side of the hole I dug. (that's a slight exageration of course, buuuut that's close to how it usually ends up).

I went to the beach yesterday, (fresh water and dry sand/grass) and had a heck of a time with locating any targets. I would get nice signals, but couldnt find the targets. There were targets everywhere but I couldnt find them once I started digging. The only 2 targets I was able to locate were a 1966 dime on the stone walkway and a 1999 Quarter in the woodchips. Both of these were basically on the surface and I used my pinpointer and located them before digging.

I guess I just don't have enough patience with the BH :-\

My Land Star is hard to pipoint with also...

TeddyB1967,

I guess you have already decided on a new detector, but I'll throw this in anyway. Are you detuning when you pinpoint? If you use full power/depth when you pinpoint you will overpower/saturate the circuitry and not be able to pinpoint, especially if the target is shallow or large. Let me know if I can help. Joe

How do you detune with a BH????????

gallileo60,

There are many detector manufacturer's out there and each one has a load of different models. Each of these different models usually have some method the user can apply to effectively detune the detector for pinpointing. The way the controls and the modes operate on each detector are called the "features" of that particular detector. These features should be explained to the customer so that he or she can decide if the detector is right for that person. I am a Tesoro dealer not a BH dealer but here is the way I see it with your lone star. To "detune" (and I use the term loosely) raise the coil (keeping it level) up 4 or 5" off the ground and use disc. or pinpoint mode, or crank the sensitivity control to full counterclockwise (low) and pinpoint in disc. or all metal mode. PM me if you need further clarification. Joe

Thanks Joe, was just curious..I know how to do it on my Ace, but dont use the ol BH much anymore...Tom

although BH are a little sensitive, if you want to find gold rings you have to dig pull tabs too. to desensitize the BH raise the coil about 6 inches and pinpoint if it's a big object (pop can) etc it will still (see) it, if not, it's either small or deep
