It does have letters and I think I see a pattern. I think it's a smashed silver coin.

Interesting. Considering the hole in it, it may have been used as some form of currency, or it could have been a decorative item on a necklace. Neat find! :occasion14:

It reminds me of the old handmade conchos that used to come out of Mexico, many moons ago.

Unless it's just melted aluminum.
Have you tested it to make sure it's silver?

I'm not a believer, just throwing it out there in case anyone can build on it. The only U.S. coin that might fit the size after a train track squash, has a "P" close to the edge on the left side of the reverse, and is 90% silver...is the walking liberty half dollar. The "I" in pluribus is in the right area but too high unless the flattening pushed it up a little. (Pretty far-fetched.)

@routefood If you could post a couple higher resolution photos of both sides we might be able to figure out which coin.
