Help with ID of my first button please

I think I can make out the letters ...IED across the top, then a hallmark? More wording across the bottom. Front appears to be plain. Brass with a steel shank.

Found in an area where I keep digging musket and Minie balls.

After rubbing with a lead pencil I've removed enough corrosion to reveal the letters "...ed" or "...ted" across the top, and "...tate" across the bottom. The front still appears to be plain. I'm hoping someone has a clue.
