I was out with a couple of buddys metal detecting on a wagon road which I believe is from the 1800's, do to an indian head penny, and a musket ball I found. The wagon road is situated behind our small town cemetary. (I thought at first it was just a small path, but after checkin' it out I saw huge ruts in it.) The road is about 10' across. I found this what-is-it thing in the middle of where the road splits. I have been wondering for a while what in the world this is...Any help would be great. :)

Hi MA_Hunter, welcome! (even though I see you've been here for a while, I don't recall coming across your posts) What size is this item?

PBK, here's your comparison picture....

Thanks for all the info, and I looked up the button online and the 18th century ones do look similar to mine. Thanks :)

Thanks for the new pics, Steve. Still a pretty tough call without sharp closeup enlargements, but I'd say there's a good chance that it's a late 18th or early 19th century civilian ornamental button. Doesn't look like tombac, so the metal is probably copper, which was often gilt &/or painted.
