Help with mid 1800's farm house Pendant or Pin

I found this Sunday at a mid to late 1800s farm house. My buddy also found one but it was bent in half. Theres a clean spot in it where I rubber it with a cloth and soap. That spot looks to be silver or maybe pewter. There is a crook and key crossed over a bundle of hay theres also a sickle. Any help would be appreciated.

I was leaning in a religous direction too. Only things I could find online were Papal. I believe they called the crook a mitre? Or was it the key? Either way I found nothing with the wheat or hay and sickle.

I can see 4 attachment holes, and since your buddy also found one, I'm thinking they are coffin tags, especially with the symbolic meaning of each embossed item. Interesting find, Breezie

Re: Help with mid 1800's farm house find

Interesting. The original late 1700s-early 1800's farm house is across the road and a stream. About 1/8th of a mile away. These were found in the newer farm houses yard. Only about 40 yds from the house. Would they bury someone that close to the house. They were found about 40 ft apart. The back has a thin bar going across it but the middle part of the bar is missing. Only the 2 places it was attached and maybe an 1/8 of an inch of the bar remain. The bar is the same material also. Any ideas on cleaning this?

Can you post a pic of the back of it so we can see where and how the bar was attached?

Location can be a plus or a minus when ID-ing items. Some of the strangest things pop up in the strangest places. I once dug a Civil War 3-Ring Minie and in less than 6 inches away (at the same depth) was a 1950's lipstick tube.

As far a cemeteries are concerned, I say 'yes' there could have been a burial ground that close to house or maybe the house was not there at the time.

Have you determined the material yet? Does it attract a magnet? When need to find out the material before trying to clean it.

It is not magnetic. In the spots that are clean down to the silver material it looks to be slightly pourus. I will post a picture of the back tomorrow morning.

Interesting item. I'm mainly just tagging for updates. I like things with mysterious, unidentified markings on them.

I just thought I would report in and say I am researching the idea of ...

Casket/Coffin Plaque/Plate

The symbols tie in. As do the size and shape.

The only problem is 90% of what I'm seeing has someone's name on it.

The search continues.

Good job! It seems more than coincidence that the symbols are related to ...

"Patrons of Husbandry"

That is unless the same sort of symbolizm was used by every Tom, Dick, and Harry. Which doesn't seem likely. Your lead led me to this ...

VINTAGE PATRONS OF HUSBANDRY WATCH FOB

Vintage Patrons of Husbandy watch fob. Enameled blue border. Back reads Fuller Regalia Co.

We will know more when we see the back. I dont think its a fob but maybe a medal. One of those 3 part hanging medals.

It may not be a "Patrons of Husbandry" emblem after all. About 99% of the items I have seen of theirs all have the "Shaking Hands" image on it, and/or a "P.H." I also discovered the "Odd Fellows" organization used similar imagry, especially the "Sheperd's Crook." But whatever the case may be, indications are that it may very well be "Fraternal" related. :dontknow:

Wheat, sheperds crook, scythe, key, found on a farm... I think its National Grange order of Patrons of Husbandry because Oddfellows doesnt usually have wheat.

I think it may have broken from a medal something like this. The letters may be on the other part of the medal.

Re: Help with mid 1800's farm house Pendant or Pin

After considerable searching, here's the best I could find so far. The collection of items are described as follows ...

COLLETCTION OF CHAZY GRANGE NO. 981 CHAZY N.Y IN MEMORAIUM RIBBONS.

The pictures are as follows ...

1. Complete collection of ribbons.
2. Close up of pin and "plaque." (Original)
3. Close up of pin and "plaque." (After color adjustment).

The so called plaque appears to be the right size. But it only has writing on it and no symbols. I can't quite make out what it says on the plaque, but it appears to be the same type of plaque which is attached to the fourth from the left ribbon in the top row of the full collection picture. Because it is the upper most piece, I suspect the plaque has a pin on the back of it for attaching it to clothing. And that it likely ran through the ribbon first, as I can see no holes in it. :dontknow:

Once again, the majority of the "Patrons of Husbandry" items I have been seeing all have the "Shaking Hands" image and/or a "P.H."

Re: Help with mid 1800's farm house Pendant or Pin

deadbird.81 ~

Questions: (pertaining to be back side of the item).

1. Is the so called "slot" on the left concave or convex?
2. Does the so called "bump" on the right appear to be a weld spot, or something else?
3. What are the exact measurements?

Thanks.
