Help with military button

Last year I found this button at a park in Indiana that has been in existence for over 100 years. It appears to be a military button that has been shot through. My questions are - Is this a real military button? If so, is there any way of telling which war it comes from. It appears to have been a two piece button with the back missing. Thanks in advance for your help.

It appears to be WWI button. Here is an example

My problem is that I've seen this same design on a WWII button, so I'm still at a loss as to who to distinguish them.

It's a Great Seal button and has been in use since 1902. Your version, with the rim, was made starting in 1910. Without a back mark it will be nearly impossible to date it more accurately. From the World War One era until 1923, the US army's Great Seal buttons had what was called "black finish" to keep the shiny brass from giving away a hidden soldier's position to the enemy. There seems to be not even a tiny trace of black finish on your button, so it dates from after 1923.
