I have found a great site to hunt. It's an old 4 four-story farmhouse with servants quarters, chicken coop, barn, and outhouse, all still standing!! I have found a few things there already, but its difficult because there seems to be a TON of iron in the ground around the house. Any recommendations? Should I get a smaller coil? Will it find the deep stuff? Is there a setting on the MXT to ignore the iron?

Thanks in advance..

Wow I figured at least one person would reply. I know I am not the only MXT user out there. Sheesh! ;)

Is there a setting on the MXT to ignore the iron?

(Try setting it down and picking up a Minelab Sovereign GT? tee hee.)

The small eclipse 5.3 coil, set disc to the point that iron breaks up a little on a faster sweep. Relic mode will help distinguish the iron also. Get ready for some noise either way if you want to be productive in an iron laden site.

Make sure you have ground balanced it. Set the toggle to lock, and turn down the Gain down to around 7. Place your trigger in the forward position. Good luck and you do have one heck of a good machine. I have ran mine along side some of the other top of the line detectors and have never been let down...

I have the standard coil on my MXT and it can be a bugger to hunt with lots of iron in the area. What I do if I don't want to take the time, or don't have the time to take to dig all the iron is listen and watch for little bleeps and higher readings on the screen. It's usually a give-away that something else is with or beside the iron object. Just be sure that your coil is flat on the ground or you will get these 'false' readings. Sometimes it pays off. I found a 1889 just last week in the middle of a bunch of nails by doing just this. OH and make sure you go realllly slow~! :) Hope this helps.
