beautiful collection larson...
have you found any bird whistles yet?

hi pip, what is a bird whistle?

long bone from an eagles wing..made into a simple whistle...
couldn't find a pic...

pip, do these type whistles come from a bone with oval shaped bumps on the side of the bone??

I think I have a few whistles, maybe about 5 or 6 of them
I will look for them and post them as soon as I can

;D
thanks...you must have a village site there...a review of dept of war records may identify the site.

A lot of those beads were traded from long distances. The smaller, thinner, tube-shaped beads are Dentalium shells from the Northwest coast (they're shell aren't they?). I'm using a lap top computer with a crappy screen right now.

The two small sea shells look to be Olivella or Marginella shells. Olivella shells found in the Dakotas have been identified as coming from either the Gulf of Mexico or the Pacific Ocean. They also could have come from the Gulf of California.

Your sites definitely show long-distance trading!
:o

larson, that is an awesome tray of Beads. I love finding Beads and you have some really nice examples. Thanks for the pictures.

runtee, those shells you mention sure look like Marginellas to me. We find a bunch of those on our Ft Ancient sites in my area.

Here is a picture of some Marginellas and a picture of a Bone Flute or Whistle. There are Marginellas around the Triangle and some under the Flute. It's amazing that they were traded that far north.

turkey wing bones were used to make turkey calls  still are by some turkey hunting folks .

porupine quills were another big bead item as well.

I got some nice trade beads -- red and white awale (african style trade bead) and various seed beads of differant colors from a spanish mission / trade site are burnt in 1702 by brirish raiders --- the local county in its wisdom --has put a fish peir parking lot over the "spot" I used to get em from.

Outstanding collection, Larson1951. Hope you post the whistle pics. They were used in the Sundance and in fights.
