here's my problem..

i mainly a relic hunt, but i recently got permission to detect a old beach. it closed down in the 40's and is now on private land.

i have been there twice so far and i have been finding some great items..however, i have a bit of a problem in the water.. my machine will pick out a good target but as soon as i put my shovel in the water it kicks up so much silt i cannot see into the water to retrieve my target.

whats the secret?

Re: here's my problem..

is it a sandy or mucky bottom? would a water scoop work? if not how about a floating sifter like the one RTDE3 uses at the sharkpit?.....just some thoughts.

Re: here's my problem..

Shovel? At least get a scoop and/or make a floating sifter. Reilly's Treasured Gold makes great scoops.

Re: here's my problem..

If your talking technique I use my foot to mark the area and then use the scoop and try to find it.

Re: here's my problem..

a large shovel is essential for the ground in the water..it is all hard packed rocks..my small digger will not do any good here.

like i said as soon as the trowl or shovel touches the bottom so much silt is lifted its impossible to retrieve targets, u canot even see ur hand 2 inches below the surface..

Re: here's my problem..

With a proper scoop, you have the silt and mud wash through the holes in the scoop leaving coins and rings inside the scoop. Nothing in the scoop the first time, scoop again till you have it, and keep checking the hole till there are no more sounds and fill in the hole and move on. You don't even need your eyes.

Re: here's my problem..

And if thats not big enough, use a #2 shovel (full size) and a screen made with chickenwire. The scoops work pretty good, though.

Re: here's my problem..

i got a scoop like that but the ground is too rocky and packed for it to dig into with a tool like that..

i'm giving up..ill just stick the dry land

use the shovel, it may be worth it. If you are having this problem, you can bet others have, too. Semi virgin ground? ;)
