Here's what can happen without consolidation

I was doing some clean-up and reorganization a few days ago. I came across a flat of fossil teeth from the Peace River that I had neglected to consolidate for some reason . . . probably fifteen years ago, give or take a few. Before I throw these into my 'rock garden,' I thought I'd use 'em to illustrate the need to consolidate all vertebrate fossils, particularly teeth.

I don't know how long these teeth (and others in the flat) remained intact . . . two years? . . . ten years? They were out of sight and out of mind among many other flats of fossils. Scores of Equus horse teeth, collected even earlier and consolidated without too much delay, remain intact today with no losses. All the horse teeth are stored in an insulated building where there are no extremes of temperature.

My point is: You never know which tooth or bone will split, or when it will happen. If you find something you might want to pass on to your children, grandchildren, or to a museum, consolidate it. (You can search the archives here for threads about consolidants.)

Ahh..that's a shame.. I'm sorry that happened.
Very good of you to post as a demonstration Harry.
I agree 100%

Great post. We had this talk earlier and I have not done it to any of mine yet. Thanks!
