Herkimer Diamonds

Besides metal detecting I enjoy hunting for Herkimer Diamonds.
Any one else look for them. They come in all shapes and sizes.
Hard work at my age to bust rock. Still get a adrenaline rush every time I find them.

In 1957, my dad had a one month training class on a new Remington Rand computer in New York. My mom, brother and I road with my dad from Minnesota to live there while he trained.
We searched for and found some Herkimer diamonds in an area near a beautiful river. My mom kept them in her jewelry box. Thanks for bringing back the memory...

Spent a week on vacation in a rented cabin on the Canada Creek near the diamond mines this past September.

Our usual haunt was The Ace of Diamonds mine by the KOA camp ground

My wife grew up near there on the Mowhawk River. She had quite a few around here somewhere she brought when she moved down to the south. The Amish up there would sell specimens they scratched up someplace. They had given quite a few to my father in law, and I wound up with them somehow. Been up there a few times, but never made it to where they're dug. Nice country up there, but being a Southern gent, I've never liked to linger too far north of Virginia.

The ones I shared pictures of above are just a handfulof what My wife has displayed around our house.
I dig em she keeps em. She is into all types of crystals.

My parents took me up there in I think 1959. Back then there were still lots of them in the ground and digging and sifting was all that was required to find them. Nowadays you gotta bust hard rock to find them. I still have a few around here someplace, the small perfect ones are spectacular crystals.

I rented out a private mine at diamond mountain. Was a bit expensive, but they had a guy running the backhoe, drill, and hydraulic splitter for you. Found all sorts of goodies, including scepters and skeletal Herkimers. We came out with many many herkimers and a few that were almost fist sized.
